Overview

At a Glance

Program Name: AgriScience Program – Projects, delivered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). It supports pre-commercial applied research and development in Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector.

Support Type: Non-repayable contribution funding, AAFC collaborative R&D services, or a combination of both. Funding can reach CAD 5 million per project, subject to cost-sharing rules.

Application Deadline: No fixed deadline is listed. Project summaries are accepted on an ongoing basis until program funding is committed or AAFC announces otherwise. The program is scheduled to end on 31 March 2028.

Program Focus

This opportunity supports innovative agricultural and agri-food research that moves from proof of concept toward prototype stage. Priority areas include climate and environment, economic growth, and sector resilience.

Projects with strong environmental outcomes—such as emissions reduction, carbon sequestration, climate adaptation, soil and water health, biodiversity, and reducing agricultural plastics—are especially relevant.

Location

Open to eligible organizations that are incorporated and operating in Canada. Eligible Indigenous organizations may also apply under alternative legal-documentation provisions.

Program Benefits

Successful applicants may receive:

  • Up to CAD 5 million per project
  • Up to CAD 10 million per applicant across the 2023–2028 program period
  • Normally up to 50% AAFC cost-sharing; eligible environmental nonprofits may receive up to 70%
  • Support for research generally between technology-readiness levels 4 and 7, from proof of concept through prototype development
  • Access to collaborative R&D support from AAFC scientists, where applicable
Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be an incorporated Canadian for-profit or nonprofit organization, or an eligible Indigenous organization
  • Be able to enter into a legal funding agreement
  • Have R&D capacity directly or through a research partner
  • Show that they can cover their required share of project costs
  • Provide two years of audited or review-engagement financial statements, or discuss alternatives if newly incorporated

Academic institutions and sole proprietorships cannot apply directly, although universities and colleges can participate as research partners.

Projects must be novel, research-based, and aligned with a program priority. Marketing, commercialization-only work, business management, regulatory or standards testing, and simple data collection are generally not eligible.

Application Process

The process has two stages:

  1. Project summary: Submit a short summary describing the project’s objectives, research method, novelty, impact, available co-funding, financial-statement status, and a high-level budget.
  2. Full application by invitation: AAFC reviews the summary and may invite eligible applicants to submit a detailed proposal, work plan, budget, financial documents, and support letters.

Project summaries are emailed to aafc.agriscienceprogram-programmeagri-science.aac@agr.gc.ca.
